Former Minister, Sam Momah dies at 77

Former Minister of Science and Technology, Sam Momah is dead at the age of 77.  Momah died on Wednesday, July 29, following complications from diabetes. Lifeline Care Assocaition who announced the death of the late Minister who was their grand patron, wrote;  “We regret to announce the passing of our Grand Patron, Maj. Gen. (Dr.) Sam Momah (RTD.) – the father to our Founder, Dr. Nkem Momah. His passing occurred yesterday.  “His many contributions and unflinching commitment to the growth of our Charity and service to the nation at large will forever be cherished. “We kindly request your prayers for his peaceful repose and consolation to the family at this time. May God grant his gentle soul eternal rest by His side. Amen!”

Crystal Palace and Ivorian winger, Wilfried Zaha, has said black footballers are becoming scared to use social media because of the alarming cases of racist abuse. Earlier this month, the Ivory Coast international was sent sickening racist messages, which resulted in a 12-year-old boy being arrested in connection with the incident.  Speaking in a new interview with CNN, the 27-year-old revealed he has created a platform to help fight off racist abuse, but says blacks footballers don't fancy being on social media anymore. Woman chained to a pillar by her husband is rescued in Ebonyi

A woman who was chained to a pillar for 18 hours by her husband has been rescued in Ebonyi State. Mrs. Ngozi Chukwuani was chained by husband Uche Chukwuani to a pillar inside their home at No 1 Ike street in Abakaliki. Afterward, Uche fled with the key to the padlock. It was revealed that the couple's daughter attempted to save her mother from her father's beating but the father hit his daughter’s head with the same chain he used to restrain his wife. Mrs. Chukwuani was later rescued by men of the Ekeaba Police division. Breaking the woman free took great efforts because the key was not available. They had to employ a welder to cut through the chains to free her. The incident happened on Monday, July 27. The Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum has slammed the Nigerian Army stationed in Baga, a town in Kukawa local government of the state, after suspected Boko Haram members attacked his convoy on Wednesday, July 29. Governor Zulum had departed Maiduguri, the state capital on Monday afternoon July 27, for the northern part of the state in continuation of the food distribution programme which he started earlier in the month. Newly married soldier is shot dead by fellow military colleague in Borno

A newly married military officer was shot dead by his colleague in Borno state following a misunderstanding. Lieutenant Babakaka Shehu Ngorgi of the 202 Battalion, who got married in December 2019, was talking to his wife Hauwa Alhaji Kolomi when one of his colleagues shot him from the back six times in Bama, Borno. After shooting him, the attacker was reportedly heard screaming, "I have achieved my aim." Attacker It is not yet clear why the soldier killed Lt Ngorgi, who is his senior in the army and on the battlefield.  Friends have gone on various social media platforms to mourn Ngorgi.

Two airplanes collide at Lagos airport

A wing tip accident was witnessed at the cargo area of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos on Wednesday, July 29.  The accident occurred when a Middle East Airlines plane was coming to park on the apron while a Turkish Airlines aircraft was taxiing out. Passengers on the Turkish Airlines flight were made to disembark and it was further learned that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has been notified and would issue a statement on the incident.

Tchidi Chikere praises his nanny as he adopts her as his mother

Nigerian filmmaker, Tchidi Chikere took to Instagram to praise his nanny as he reunited with her. He also said he's adopted her as his mother.  Recounting some childhood memories his nanny relayed to him, the filmmaker said it made him emotional and also made him feel like his late mum came back alive.  Chikere wrote;  This woman here "carried" me when I was a baby. She was my Nanny. So we met!!! And she told me stories of how I would pee n poo on her as a baby. It was sooo emotional for me..felt like my late mum came back alive..When we parted I knew I d adopted a new mum. Afenifere leader, Pa Fasanmi dead at 94

Senator Ayo Fasanmi, leader of Yoruba socio-cultural group 'Afenifere' is dead at the age of 94.  The Afenifere leader died in Osogbo in the late hours of Wednesday, July 29, after a brief illness. The second republic senator's son, Afolabi who confirmed his death wrote in a statement released on Thursday, July 30;   “With gratitude to the Almighty God for a life well spent, we wish to announce the demise of our father, Senator Ayo Fasanmi, at the ripe age of 94 years.”

Widow narrates tragic details of how she separated from her kids and lost one child while running from bandits in southern Kaduna

A widow who lost one of her children and got separated from the others, while being chased by bandits who attacked her village in southern Kaduna, has narrated the harrowing experience. Mama Hajaratu David, 45, lost her husband in 2018 and was left to raise her three children herself. Sadly, on Friday, July 10, 2020, bandits attacked her village and rendered her and her kids homeless. She and her three children were sleeping in Chibwob, their village under Atyap Chiefdom in Zangon Kataf LG Area of Kaduna State, when she woke up to the sounds of gunshots around 12 midnight. She realized then that the village was under attack. While running, she got separated from her two older kids but held on to the youngest. Zimbabwe offers £2.7 billion compensation to 4,500 white farmers whose land was seized by Robert Mugabe

The Zimbabwean government has signed an agreement with the country’s dispossessed commercial white farmers to compensate them with US$3.5 billion after their land was seized under Robert Mugabe's regime.  Over 20 years ago, Robert Mugabe forcibly took more than 4,000 farms from the country's 4,500 white large-scale commercial farmers. He justified the land grabs as a payback to correct historical wrongs, claiming they were forcibly taken from the nation's blacks. Zimbabwe’s Minister of Finance and Economic Development, Mthuli Ncube officially signed the compensation agreement with former commercial farmers on Wednesday, July 29. Policeman raped me till dawn for not wearing face mask, widow alleges

A human rights activist, Prince Wiro, has charged the Rivers State Police Command to investigate and prosecute its operatives accused of arresting and raping a widow over alleged breach of COVID-19 protocols. The 32-year-old widow alleged that policemen attached to the Sakpenwa Police Division, Tai Local Government Area, arrested her on Tuesday, July 28, for not wearing a face mask, then took her to a guest house where one of them raped her at gunpoint. She narrated: "I was returning from Bori to Port Harcourt when I met some police officers at a checkpoint. They arrested me for not wearing nose mask. They kept me long there with them. "Thereafter they carried me from one place to the other, claiming they want to take me to the police station but never took me to any police station. The convoy of Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno state was attacked by yet-to-be-identified gunmen at Baga, a town in the state, on Wednesday, July 29. According to reports, the Governor had gone to visit some Internally Displaced Person camps when his convoy was attacked. “The governor went to Kukawa, and on his way to Baga, his convoy was attacked. Nobody was injured,” a resident said It is yet to be determined if the gunmen were Boko Haram members. One of the governor’s aides, Mohammed Mai Bukar, wrote on Facebook that the governor and every member of his entourage are fine. “To Our Concerned citizens H.E Prof.Zulum and His Entourage are all fine and there was (were) no casualties. Thanks!” his post read This is the second known attack on the convoy of Governor Zulum within a year. While returning from a trip to Bama local government area last year, his convoy was attacked at Konduga in the state.

Senator Ali Ndume, the chairman of the Senate Committee on the Army, has kicked against the reintegration of ex-Boko Haram fighters into the society.  The Nigerian Military last week, released 601 repentant Boko Haram terrorists into the community after they completed the Deradicalization, Rehabilitation, and Reintegration program organized by the Operation Safe Corridor of the Military. In an interview with BBC Hausa on Wednesday, July 29, Ndume who represents Borno South Senatorial District, said the rehabilitation exercise is unacceptable by his people. Gunmen attack Bullion van in Ebonyi, kill four policemen

Four policemen escorting a bullion van from Enugu State to Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital, have been confirmed dead following gunmen attack on Wednesday, July 29.  The incident occurred at Ezzamgbo Junction in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi state and it was gathered that the robbers first attacked the escort van conveying the policemen.  Four of the police officers were reportedly killed, while two sustained varying degrees of injury. Ebonyi state's commissioner of Police, Phillip Maku who confirmed the incident said the robbers trailed the bullion van from Enugu but were not able to gain access to it as its driver quickly drove out of the area.  Maku said;  “They damaged one of the tires of the bullion van, but the driver was able to escape with the van. Gbadebo Richard, a 300-level student of the Department of European Studies, Faculty of Arts, University of Ibadan reportedly died on Tuesday, July 28 in an industrial accident.  According to Sahara Reporters, the student who was on a night shift fell into one of the machines at the Oluyole factory of Henkel Nigeria Limited, producers of WAW detergent and soap. His colleagues were reportedly not aware of the accident until they saw blood on one end of the machine.  A source said told the publication;  “His family members were not informed by the company until an unknown number called them. Malik B, an American rapper and founding member of The Roots, has died at the age of 47.  The hip-pop group announced the death of the Philadelphia-born MC in a social media post last night. ' It is with heavy hearts and tearful eyes that we regretfully inform you of the passing of our beloved brother and long time Roots member Malik Abdul Basit. May he be remembered for his devotion to Islam, His loving brotherhood and his innovation as one of the most gifted MCs of all time. We ask that you please respect his family and extended family in our time of mourning such a great loss. '  His cause of death wasn't revealed. Mentally unstable woman puts up a struggle as attempt is made to take her and her child off the streets

A mentally unstable woman and her 6-year-old son who roam the streets at Amaoka Junction, Nnewi, were taken off the streets on Wednesday, July 29, but the woman didn't give in without a fight. The Anambra State's Ministry of Women and Children Affairs rescued the mother and her son following series of posts made by concerned citizens on social media, pleading for the government to intervene on behalf of the woman and her two children roaming aimlessly along Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital Nnewi. When the social welfare department of the Ministry of Women and Children Affairs arrived, they found the woman with one child and she put up a fight when they tried to take her.
