School teacher reportedly on the run after he allegedly beat his student to death in Lagos

  A Nigerian man, Ridwan Oyewunmi, has called on Nigerians on social media to help him get justice after a school teacher who is currently on the run, allegedly beat his younger brother, Boluwatife Omelaja, to death at a school in Ikorodu, Lagos state on Thursday,  November 26.   In a Twitter thread, the distraught brother said the teacher beat Omelaja because he couldn’t answer a question. His tweets read   " Twitter NG i just lost my brother to School Teacher Brutality. Mr Emmanuel(frame 1)is a sec school teacher at Elihans college, Ikorodu in Lagos. FG asks for one week to review petrol price

The Federal Government has requested for a week break from a meeting with organised labour to review the new petrol price increase.   The Group Managing Director of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC), Mele Kyari who attended the meeting on November 26, stated that the cooperation cannot unilaterally announce a reversal of the new price without consultation.   Both the labour and government team led by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Boss Mustapha then agreed that the meeting should be adjourned to December 7.   Speaking at the end of the meeting, Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige said;    “By Monday, December 7, we will come back, because the message from the organised labour is clear. Buhari says FG can no longer bear electricity tariff shortfalls

President Muhammadu Buhari has said it is no longer sustainable for the Federal Government to bear the tariff shortfalls in the power sector.   Buhari said this on Thursday, Nov 26, at the inauguration of Eko Electricity Distribution Company’s Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition-Distribution (SCADA) Management System Centre in Lagos.   Buhari, represented by the Minister of Power, Mr. Sale Mamman, said the SCADA system would help EKEDC monitor and respond more quickly to faults and reduce outage durations, thereby improving the quality of service to customers.   He added that his regime remains committed to addressing the liquidity challenges adversely affecting the power sector’s viability.   “We have noted with grave concern the increased financial burden on the Federal Government occasioned by the tariff shortfalls in the sector which are no longer sustainable,” he said.   He said the Central Bank of Nigeria’s Power Assistance Fund targeted at supporting tariff shortfalls could

UK to regulate Google and Facebook

The U.K. government said Friday, Nov 27, that it plans to create a Digital Markets Unit (DMU) to enforce "a new code to govern the behavior of platforms that currently dominate the market, such as Google and Facebook."   The aim is to protect smaller competitors and give consumers more control over personal data.   Under the new code, some of the world’s biggest tech companies may have to be more transparent about the services they provide and how they use consumers’ data. They may also be forced to give consumers a choice over whether to receive personalized advertising, and they won’t be able to place restrictions on customers that make it difficult for them to use rival platforms.    The DMU, which will be part of the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), will start work in April 2021.   The government said the DMU may be given the power to suspend, block and reverse decisions made by large tech companies. A man has been discharged and acquitted after spending 5 years in prison for a crime he says he didn't commit. According to youth advocate, Oluyemi Fasipe, the man was mistakenly arrested alongside some kidnappers. During the arrest, he was allegedly shot by SARS and his leg had to be amputated.   He spent 5 years in jail and was acquitted on Friday, Nov 27. Oluyemi said he spoke with the man's lawyer and advised him to write a petition to the Ondo State panel of inquiry on the victim's behalf.    

Bayelsa Police allegedly shoot three women while dispersing traffic

Three women were shot at in Yenagoa, Bayelsa state, while police officers on patrol duty were dispersing traffic.   The incident occurred on Wednesday, Nov 25, along the popular Tombia market area of the state.   The women hit by stray bullets have been identified as Alice Azaghene, Mrs. Ebinipiri Onojamadu, and Mudufuro Blessing.   According to reports, the policemen allegedly opened fire on roadside market women because their presence on the road caused a traffic gridlock that delayed their escort van from passing through the area.   It was gathered that the accused policemen, numbering six, came down from their van and allegedly started shooting to disperse traders and pedestrians in order to make way for their vehicle to pass freely.   The State Commissioner of Police, Mike Okoli, who arrived at the scene of the shooting, said the trigger-happy policemen had been arrested.

Kidnapper who abducted and killed 16-year-old boy in Kano begs for public execution by hanging

A 26-year-old man, who kidnapped and killed a 16-year-old boy, Tijjani Saidu, in Kano has pleaded for a public execution by hanging.   The suspect, Anas Saidu made the plea on Friday, when he led a team of police detectives and medical personnel to a farm located at Kauyen Hayin Gwarmai at Kwanar Dangora of Bebeji local government area of Kano where he buried the body of the victim.     "This is my first and not my habit. I’m pleading to Kano state government for public execution and death sentence by hanging and please I seek the forgiveness of the victim’s father and people should help me do so as well. I know the victim’s father, he lives in our area. Iyabo Ojo buries her mother, Mrs Olubunmi Victoria Fetunga

The funeral service for Iyabo Ojo's mother held on Friday, Nov 27, days after her death.   Mrs Olubunmi Victoria Fetunga passed away in her sleep in the early hours of Saturday, November 21, 2020, Iyabo Ojo announced.   She was laid to rest at Ebony Vault Cemetary, Ikoyi, Lagos State.     Some of Iyabo Ojo's colleagues were present to offer support. Iyabo Ojo's children were also present.   Speaking at the event, the actress said she's certain her mother has gone to rest. ASUU agrees to call off strike as FG agrees to pay the union N70bn

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has agreed to call off its strike which has lasted for 8 months.   The union leadership reached the consensus during a meeting with the government team led by the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, on Friday, Nov 27, in Abuja.   The FG also pledged to increase the total payment to the union to N70 billion.   This comes one week after the FG accepted the demand by the ASUU that they are exempted from the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System.

Gunmen abduct Chinese expatriate and his driver in Taraba as youths foil another kidnap attempt

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers have abducted a Chinese expatriate and his driver in Donga local government area of Taraba state.   The Chinese national was said to be traveling along Donga-Wukari road with his driver in an SUV on Tuesday, November 24, when the gunmen blocked the road and whisked them away to an unknown destination.    It was gathered that the kidnappers had contacted the Chinese company which has a base in Donga town informing them that the victims are safe but are yet to demand for ransom.   Spokesperson of the State Police Command, DSP David Misal confirmed the incident but declined to give further details   In a similar development, an attempt made by another group of kidnappers to abduct a Chinese national same Tuesday was reportedly foiled by youths in Mararaba-Baissa, Donga Local Government Area of Taraba state.    According to reports, the kidnappers attempted to abduct the Chinese national working on the construction of the 86Km Kurmi-Abong road.   Vigilant

'Rapists to be chemically castrated in Pakistan under new laws' approved by Prime Minister Imran Khan

Pakistan's Prime Minister, Imran Khan has reportedly approved in principle a law on chemical castration of rapists in the  Local reports said Mr. Khan approved the law which would also fast track sexual assault cases during a federal cabinet meeting on Tuesday, November 24th. But Pakistan's government is yet to make an official announcement.    The decision was made after the law ministry presented a draft of the anti-rape ordinance at the meeting.   According to GeoTV, Kahn said in the meeting: 'We need to ensure a safe environment for our citizens.'   He reportedly said the legislation would be clear and transparent with strict enforcement by officials.   The draft legislation is expected to increase women's role in policing and improve witness protection.   Kahn said rape survivors will be able to register complaints without fear and will have their identities protected by the government.   Pakistan has witnessed an increase in incidents of rape since 2018, when

  Big Brother Naija reality star, Kaisha Umaru is being dragged on Twitter for including her a girl said to be her maid, in her video.   She shared a video, gushing about how her skin is glowing. In the video, she is seen calling for a young lady named Deborah after gushing about her skin.   When the lady arrives, Kaisha asks her what she's making for her for breakfast and the girl responds. Kaisha then tells the lady to get on with it and bring her breakfast.   Twitter users felt she didn't need to add the last part of the video with her domestic staff so they called her out. Court to begin Nnamdi Kanu's trial in absentia

The   trial of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu will begin on Thursday November 26 as scheduled by the Federal High Court in Abuja.    Ahead of the court sitting in which   five prosecution witnesses have been lined up to testify against Nnamdi Kanu, copies of the hearing notice were served on the prosecution team in the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Kanu’s lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor.   Recall that Justice Binta Nyako had since March 28, 2019, revoked the bail granted the IPOB leader, ordered his arrest, and directed that his trial on charges of a treasonable felony would proceed in his absence; but the court had not had any sitting on the case since then.  

9 members of Ondo house of assembly kick against removal of Iroju Ogundeji as Deputy Speaker

Nine members of the Ondo State House of Assembly have condemned the impeachment of Iroju Ogundeji as the Deputy Speaker of the House.    The lawmakers who described the impeachment as unlawful, pointed out that section 92 sub 2C of the 1999 constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as amended requires a two-thirds majority and the provisions of the standing order of the House for the impeachment of the Speaker or his Deputy.   Two lawmakers – the Former Majority Leader, Jamiu Maito, representing Irele State Constituency and Ademola Edamisan – while speaking on behalf of the nine members said the motion for the impeachment of the deputy speaker was never moved at the session.    They declared the action as null and void and further stressed that it will not stand.

Two robbers to die by hanging in Ekiti state

Two men identified as Adekunle Osho, 31, and Chinedu Ugwu, 34, have been sentenced to death by hanging after being found guilty of armed robbery by an Ekiti State High Court.    The two robbers who were handed the sentence on Tuesday November 24, were reportedly involved in armed robbery and also linked to a stolen vehicle   They were convicted for robbing one Chief Ojo Gbenga of his Toyota Camry car and N150,000 cash on or about November 14, 2014 at Oke Ila, Tinuola area of Ado Ekiti. We’re ending estimated electricity billing – President Buhari

President Buhari has pledged his administration's determination to end the estimated billing regime in electricity supply. President Buhari made the pledge via his Twitter handle today November 4. The President said the first phase of one million free meters distribution in some parts of the country is already underway.   According to him, 6.5 million meters, which would be locally sourced in the Presidential Mass Metering Initiative, would meet the national deficit and impact an estimated 30 million homes across the country.   “Under the first phase of the Presidential Mass Metering Initiative, we are making funding immediately available for DisCos to roll out 1,000,000 Meters in the first phase, at no cost to consumers. Deployment has already started in parts of Kano, Kaduna, Lagos and Abuja. Future phases of this Metering Initiative will help us fully meet the 6.5 million deficit of meters nationwide, and will impact an estimated 30 million consumers. All meters under this progr
