Flights reportedly grounded at Akure airport after discovery of crater on runway

Flights at the Akure Airport in Ondo State were grounded on Monday, October 26, following the discovery of a crater on the runway.

A source within the Airport told Daily Trust that the incident forced the management of the airport to close the Airport and prevented the flight from taking off or landing in the airport, leaving many travellers were stranded.

The source disclosed that the officials of the airport authority discovered the crater, on Sunday night, October 25, and consequently closed the runway.

"The hole was discovered during the early morning check by the security of the airport. We are yet to know those behind it. I think the intention of the miscreants was to cause a plane crash in the airport," the source said.

"The security operatives have been invited to see the place. The government has to deploy the security agents to the airport so as not to allow the miscreants cause havoc there," he added.

However, spokesperson of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria, Henrietta Yakubu, while speaking on the development said that there were cracks discovered on the runway during the routine checks on Monday morning but said it had not affected the flight operations in the airport.

Henrietta added that the repair works had commenced on the cracked portions on the runway.
